It’s wild how the internet works because all it takes is one video/song to bring a brand new crop of listeners or eyes to your craft.
Recently I was talking to my girlfriend about how I lost a lot of photos and footage due to an iOS glitch. She sent me a group of videos of me performing from years ago to maybe post on my tiktok. After a long break from posting anything on there I told myself hey, why not. I decided to post a video of me performing at a KORG x In Plain Sight block party in Brooklyn (2018). This was the first leg of my mini east coast tour leading up to my residency in China.
The event was stacked with some amazing artists. A lot of my peers from Maryland and New York pulled up too. It was great vibes all around.
I honestly didn’t think too much about it when I posted the clip. For some free game I believe it’s best to post on tiktok and close the app immediately. Just let it do it’s thing. When I logged back on it was blowing UP. I think the appeal was the block party vibe along with my transition to a blend/flip I made in 2017 called “runawaaayloveee”. The previous track is a beat that’s unreleased called “babe”.
The array of comments really touched me I’m not gonna lie. Some said it reminded them of the film Brown Sugar others were feeling black pride from it. Runawaaayloveee accumulated thousands of plays on soundcloud but it’s been slow since the platform lost most of their audience due to DSPs. One viral video brought some new ears to my page.
Shoutout to my girlfriend Keierra for taking the video. She always get the good shots at my shows. Show her some love for me!
Here’s a video from when I was making “runawaaayloveee” back in 2017.
This viral moment just affirmed what I’ve been doing/creating for years and years. No matter how much music changes as long as I put my heart into the art it’ll live on for years. To overcome different barriers for the independent creative I have to post things everywhere. Every look helps the overall mission and that mission is to reach the people on my terms.
